India has voted in favour of a United Nations resolution condemning Israeli settlements in Palestine, reported PTI on Monday.
The draft resolution, titled “Israeli settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and the occupied Syrian Golan”, was passed on November 9 by the Special Political and Decolonisation Committee (Fourth Committee) of the United Nations General Assembly.
While 145 nations voted in favour of the resolution, seven voted against it and 18 abstained.
India was joined by Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, France, Japan, Malaysia, Maldives, Russia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and the UK, among others, for condemning settlement activities in Palestine.
The UN resolution also condemns “the disruption of the livelihood of protected persons, the forced transfer of civilians and the annexation of land, whether de facto or through national legislation.”
It further reaffirmed that the Israeli settlements in Palestine were “illegal and an obstacle to peace and economic and social development”.
The United States, along with Canada, Hungary, Israel, Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia and Nauru voted against the resolution.
This comes as Israel’s war on Gaza entered its seventh week on Monday. At least 11,078 Palestinians, including 4,506 children, had been killed in the Israeli offensive in Gaza till Saturday. The Gaza health ministry has been unable to update the toll since then, reported the Associated Press.

जोस मैनुअल अल्बेरेस ने सोशल मीडिया के माध्यम से कहा कि हमने गाजा पट्टी में मानवीय संकट के बीच फिलिस्तीनी लोगों के लिए 2.6 करोड़ यूरो की राशि में एक नया सहायता पैकेज तैयार किया है। इसमें उन्होंने लिखा कि हम फिलिस्तीन के साथ सहयोग को तीन गुना करेंगे। स्पेन की ओर से 2023 में 4.85 करोड़ यूरो प्रदान किए जाएंगे।

Months after Argentina won the 2022 Fifa World Cup, Argentinian journalist Hernan Casciari and cartoonist Liniers joined hands to create an animated series on the star of the final in Qatar – goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.
As per a report in La Nacion, the series will tell the story of an 11-year-old Martinez who discovers he has a superpower which helps him accurately predict the direction in which he should dive to stop a penalty or freekick.
Titled ‘Emi On Off,’ the story will revolve around the dilemma a young Martinez faces on whether using his superpower during football matches is cheating and is expected to culminate with a reconstruction the 2022 World Cup final, which Argentina won on penalities against France.
The 30-year-old Martinez saved a total of four penalties on that fateful day in Qatar to lead Argentina to their first World Cup triumph in 36 years.

India came up with a strong performance to hold England 1-1 in their third match in Barcelona at the ongoing 100th Anniversary Spanish Hockey Federation – International Tournament.

Israeli forces say they have completed a 48-hour military operation in the West Bank city of Jenin – the largest in two decades. Beginning on Monday, July 3, the Israel Defence Force hit the city with drone strikes, sending in hundreds of troops and bulldozing through the narrow streets. Two days later, 12 Palestinians were reported dead and 100 injured. One Israeli soldier was killed.
In what was billed as an operation to clear Jenin of terrorists, Israeli forces arrested Palestinian militants, seized weapons and neutralised improvised explosive devices. United States President Joe Biden and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi must address “grave human rights concerns” in both countries when they meet later this week, non-governmental organisation Amnesty International said on Tuesday.
Modi on Tuesday morning left New Delhi for a three-day visit to the United States. He is slated to meet Biden on June 22.
Aakar Patel, the chair of board at Amnesty International India, said that the two leaders “must hold each other to account for their human rights commitments, rather than sweep human rights issues in their respective countries under the rug”.
Patel added: “While the red carpet has been rolled out for Prime Minister Modi, people in India continue to experience grave human rights abuses.”
Amanda Klasing, national director of government relations and advocacy at Amnesty International USA, said that Modi has presided over a period of rapid deterioration of human rights protections in India, including increasing violence against religious minorities, shrinking civil society space and the criminalisation of dissent.
The organisation said that many state governments in India “have passed laws to criminalise consensual inter-faith marriages and undertaken punitive demolitions targeting Muslim-owned properties”.

Sai Varshith Kandula, 19, has said that his goal was to “get to the White House, seize power and be put in charge of the nation”, according to an affidavit filed in a US District Court on Tuesday. When asked how he planned to seize power, Kandula said he would “kill the president if that’s what I have to do and would hurt anyone that would stand in my way”. He had been planning the attack for six months, Kandula told the investigators.
