Chess, Candidates 2024: Praggnanandhaa and Vaishali earn first wins of the tournament in Round 3

Indian chess Grandmasters Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu and his elder sister Vaishali were the only two players to score wins in the third round of the open and women’s section, respectively, of the 2024 Candidates tournament in Toronto, Canada on Saturday.

It was also their first wins in the competition.

Praggnanandhaa, playing with black pieces, beat compatriot Vidit Gujrathi, who had stunned world No 3 Hikaru Nakamura a day earlier in Round 2.

The win for 18-year-old Praggnanandhaa takes him to an overall score of 1.5 after he drew Alireza Firouzja in the opening round, followed by a loss to Gukesh Dommaraju on Friday.

Like her younger brother, 22-year-old Vaishali also bounced back from a loss in the second round to beat Bulgarian player Nurgyul Salimova. Vaishali had started her campaign with a draw against compatriot Koneru Humpy, followed by a loss to China’s Tan Zhongyi.

As for the other Indians competing in the tournament, that serves as a gateway to the World Championships match in their respective categories, Humpy drew against Tan while using white pieces.

Lok Sabha polls: BJP leader to take legal action against Shashi Tharoor over cash-for-votes claim

Union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Saturday said that he will take legal action against Congress MP Shashi Tharoor after the latter accused him of bribing voters with cash.

Chandrasekhar and Tharoor are contesting the Lok Sabha elections from Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram constituency.

On Saturday, Tharoor claimed in an interview that he had received information from various sources, including “certain important community leaders and parish priests” suggesting that the Bharatiya Janata Party was trying to influence voters with cash, The Hindu reported.

However, the Congress MP expressed doubts whether those who have allegedly received the money will be willing to come forward with evidence. Tharoor also alleged that the BJP could have spent “20, 30 or even 100 times” the amount that the other candidates have spent on campaigning.

Soon after this, Chandrasekhar challenged Tharoor to disclose to whom he gave the money.

“With his baseless allegation, he has also damaged the reputation of religious and community organisations in the [state] capital,” the BJP leader said in a social media post. “Rest assured, I will ensure that this slander is countered using all legal means. It’s disgraceful to see a three-time MP stooping to third-rate politics in his desperation.”

Gujarat HC pulls up state for FIR against sanitation worker for ‘wilfully’ entering septic tank

The Gujarat High Court on Friday reprimanded the state government for filing a first information report against a contractual sanitation worker for “wilfully” entering a septic tank despite a prohibition on manual scavenging, Live Law reported on Saturday.

A division bench of Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal and Justice Aniruddha Mayee was hearing a public interest litigation by Ahmedabad-based nongovernmental organisation Manav Garima that is seeking strict implementation of the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013.

Manual scavenging – or the practice of removing human excreta by hand from sewer lines or septic tanks – is banned under the law, but the practice remains prevalent in several parts of the country.

A sanitation worker had died and another suffered serious injuries while cleaning a septic tank at the Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute’s Bhavnagar campus in November. The state had booked the surviving worker for illegally and “wilfully” entering the septic tank.

The state government had conducted an inquiry into the incident on the court’s direction and submitted a report stating the actions taken and actions proposed to be taken.

Congress’ Abhishek Singhvi challenges Rajya Sabha polls loss through draw of lots in High Court

Congress leader Abhishek Singhvi on Saturday moved the Himachal Pradesh High Court challenging the returning officer’s decision to declare the winner of the Rajya Sabha elections in the state in February through a draw of lots, Live Law reported.

On February 28, Singhvi had lost the election to the Upper House to Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Harsh Mahajan. Only one Rajya Sabha seat in the state was up for election.

At that point, the Congress had 40 MLAs in the 68-member Assembly. While the BJP had 25 seats, the remaining three members were independents. The Rajya Sabha election resulted in a tie with both candidates securing 34 votes.

After the tie, the names of Singhvi and Mahajan were written on separate slips and placed into a box, as per Rule 75 of the Conduct of Election Rules, 1961. This was in the presence of the candidates and the polling agents. One slip was randomly drawn from the box.

The slip had Singhvi’s name. Singhvi was then eliminated from the selection process, leading the returning officer to declare Mahajan as the winner. Mahajan was sworn in as a Rajya Sabha MP on April 3.

Singhvi has challenged this decision of the returning officer.

Ladakh: Activist Sonam Wangchuk withdraws call for march to LAC citing ‘suppression’ by government

Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk on Saturday withdrew his call for a protest march from Ladakh’s Leh to the Line of Actual Control planned for Sunday.

The march was meant to highlight the scale of the alleged Chinese intrusions in Ladakh and the land taken over by Indian corporates. Local tribal leaders were to lead the protest.

Ahead of the protest, the administration of the Union Territory had imposed prohibitory orders against gatherings under section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure in the area.

Under these circumstances, “chances of violence are very high, which could then be used to label this peaceful movement anti-national”, Wangchuk said in a social media post on Saturday.

On March 26, Wangchuk ended his 21-day hunger strike that demanded statehood for Ladakh and the protection of the Himalayan ecology. Wangchuk and other civil society leaders in Ladakh are also trying to press the Union government to implement the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution for Ladakh.

The Sixth Schedule under Article 244 (Administration of Scheduled Areas and Tribal Areas) of the Constitution guarantees certain protections for land and a nominal autonomy for citizens in designated tribal areas. Mohun Bagan Super Giant rode on Dimitrios Petratos’ goal to beat Punjab FC 1-0 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi in the Indian Super League match on Saturday, to keep alive their chances of winning the League Winners Shield.

The win for the Kolkata-club takes them to second place in the league table with 42 points from 20 matches. They trail only Mumbai City FC, who have 44 points, as both teams now have two matches left in the group stage – including a face-off at the Salt Lake Stadium on April 15.

The defeat for 11th-placed Punjab FC however, meant that they no longer have a chance of making it the playoffs.

Last month, I spent several stimulating days in Mizoram. I had some knowledge of the state’s political history, met numerous Mizos in the course of my life, but never visited the state before.

Supreme Court stays Allahabad HC judgement against Uttar Pradesh Board of Madarsa Education Act

The Supreme Court on Friday stayed the Allahabad High Court’s judgment ruling the 2004 Uttar Pradesh Board of Madarsa Education Act as unconstitutional, reported Live Law.

“We are of the view that the issues raised in the petitions merit closer reflection,” said a bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandracuhd and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra.

The court issued a notice on the five special leave petitions filed against the High Court ruling. It also observed that the High Court erred in interpreting the provisions of the Act, which are regulatory in character.

The top court said that directions of the High Court would impact the future course of education of nearly 17 lakh students.

The Uttar Pradesh Board of Madarsa Education Act provides for madrasas in Uttar Pradesh to operate under the aegis of the state minority welfare department, unlike other minority educational institutes that operate under the education department.

Out of nearly 25,000 madrasas in Uttar Pradesh, more than 16,500 are recognised by the Uttar Pradesh Board of Madarsa Education, The Indian Express reported.

On March 22, the Allahabad High Court ruled that the Act was unconstitutional. A division bench of Justices Vivek Chaudhary and Subhash Vidyarthi directed the state government to accommodate students studying in Islamic schools in other educational institutions.

NCERT deletes three references to Babri mosque demolition from Class 12 political science textbook

The National Council for Education Research and Training has deleted at least three references to the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya from the Class 12 political science textbook of the Central Board of Secondary Education, reported The Indian Express.

Instead, the lesson now gives primacy to the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, the newspaper reported.

The educational body, which advises the Union government on school syllabi, has revised Chapter 8 of the Politics in India since Independence textbook to refer to the Supreme Court’s 2019 verdict on the Ayodhya dispute as one of the five key recent developments in Indian politics.

On November 9, 2019, the Supreme Court held that the demolition of the Babri mosque on December 6, 1992, was illegal, but handed over the land to a trust for a Ram temple to be constructed. The court also directed that a five-acre plot in Ayodhya be allotted to Muslims to build a mosque.

The Ram Janmabhoomi temple is now being built on the site of the Babri mosque, which was demolished by Hindutva extremists because they believed that it stood on the spot where the Hindu deity Ram was born. The incident had triggered communal riots across the country.

इंटरनेट डेस्क। हिमाचल प्रदेश प्रशासनिक सेवा प्रतियोगिता परीक्षा 2024 के अधिसूचना जारी की जा चुकी है। हिमाचल प्रदेश लोक सेवा आयोग की ओर से इसके तहत कुल 26 पदों पर भर्ती की जाएगी। इसके माध्यम से एचचएएस, डिस्ट्रिक्ट कलेक्टर, तहसीलदार, जिला पंचायत अधिकारी पदों पर भर्ती की जाएगी।

COMEDK UGET 2024 registration deadline today; apply now at comedk.org

Today, April 5, is the last date to apply for the Consortium of Medical, Engineering, and Dental Colleges of Karnataka (COMEDK) Under Graduate Entrance Test 2024 (UGET 2024). Eligible candidates can apply for the posts on the official website www.comedk.org.

The exam is scheduled to be conducted on May 12, 2024, for admission to Engineering Courses in COMEDK member institutions. COMEDK UGET 2024 will be conducted for admissions into 150 engineering colleges in Karnataka.

IPL 2024: टूर्नामेंट के इतिहास में पहली बार हुआ ऐसा

खेल डेस्क। इंडियन प्रीमियर लीग के 17वें संस्करण में अभी तक 17 मैच पूरे हो चुके हैं। अभी तक इस टूर्नामेंट में कई रिकॉर्ड ध्वस्त हो चुके हैं। अभी तक बल्लेबाजों ने बड़ी संख्या में छक्के लगाए हैं। इस अभी तक हुए इंडियन प्रीमियर लीग के इस संस्करण के 17 मैचों में 300 से अधिक छक्के लग चुके हैं।

आईपीएल इतिहास में पहली बार इतने कम मैचों में 300 या इससे ज्यादा छक्के लग चुके हैं। अभी तक इस संस्करण में सनराइजर्स हैदराबाद के बल्लेबाज हेनरिक क्लासेन सबसे ज्यादा छक्के लगाने वाले बल्लेबाज हैं। वह अब तक सबसे ज्यादा 17 छक्के ठोक चुके हैं।

वहीं कोलकाता नाइटराइडर्स के ऑलराउंडर सुनील नरेन 12 छक्कों के साथ इस लिस्ट में संयुक्त रूप से दूसरे स्थान पर हैं। रियान पराग (राजस्थान रॉयल्स) और निकोलस पूरन (लखनऊ सुपर जायंट्स) भी इसने ही छक्के लगा चुके हैं। अभिषेक शर्मा को भी 11 छक्के लगाने में सफलता मिली है। कोलकाता नाइटराइडर्स के आंद्रे रसेल इस सीजन में 10 छक्के ठोक चुके हैं।

Doordarshan must withdraw decision to air ‘The Kerala Story’, says Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan

Kerala Chief Minister and Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday said that the state-run broadcaster Doordarshan National should withdraw its decision to air the film The Kerala Story, on grounds that the broadcast could “exacerbate communal tensions” ahead of the approaching Lok Sabha elections.

The film, directed by Sudipto Sen, was released on May 5. It claims to depict how women from Kerala were converted to Islam and recruited by the Islamic State terrorist group. The filmmakers initially claimed that 32,000 women from Kerala had joined the Islamic State, but when asked for evidence, they altered the trailer to state that the movie was a “compilation of the true stories of three young girls”.

Doordarshan had announced that the movie would be broadcast on April 5, the Hindustan Times reported.

In a post on social media, Vijayan said that film incited polarisation.

“The national news broadcaster should not become a propaganda machine of the BJP-RSS [Bharatiya Janata Party-Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh] combine and withdraw from screening a film that only seeks to exacerbate communal tensions ahead of the general elections,” he said. “Kerala will remain steadfast in opposing such malicious attempts to sow hatred.”

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, a Hindutva group, is the parent organisation of the ruling BJP.

Bollywood actor and politician Kangana Ranaut has left many social media users bemused after claiming that freedom fighter Subhas Chandra Bose was India’s first prime minister (video above). Ranaut made the remark during a Times Now Summit in New Delhi.

“Clarify me one thing for me, when we got independence, where did India’s first prime minister Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose go?” Ranaut, who is the BJP’s Lok Sabha candidate from Mandi in Himachal Prasad, asked Navika Kumar, the host. When Kumar said Bose was never prime minister of India, Ranaut retorted, “He wasn’t. But why not?”

Ranaut was echoing a line that has been taken by BJP leaders earlier. “Netaji Subhash was the first head of Akhand Bharat, who freed Andaman before 1947 and hoisted the Tricolor,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in September 2022, while inaugurating Kartavya Path and unveiling a statue of Bose’s at India Gate, New Delhi. West Bengal: Governor directs removal of education minister for alleged poll conduct violation

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose on Tuesday directed the state government to remove Minister of Education Bratya Basu from the Cabinet for an alleged violation of the Model Code of Conduct ahead of the approaching Lok Sabha polls, reported The Hindu.

The Model Code of Conduct is a set of guidelines issued by the Election Commission that political parties and governments are mandated to follow while campaigning.

Basu is alleged to have violated poll conduct rules by presiding over a “political meeting” at Gour Banga University on March 30. Bose is the chancellor of the university.

“In the light of the political meeting held in Gour Banga University under the leadership and presence of Shri Bratya Basu (Minister of Education) with other Ministers, MPs, MLAs and political leaders on 30th March, 2024, the Chancellor and Governor has directed the State government to take action against the erring Minister who has deliberately violated the election code of conduct,” said a statement issued by Raj Bhavan, the governor’s official residence.

It also said: “Be you ever so high, the law is above you.”

Delhi High Court has announced the results of Personal Assistant Stage-II, i.e., English Shorthand Tests. Eligible candidates can download their results from the official websites recruitment.nta.nic.in or delhihighcourt.nic.in.

The exam was conducted on February 10, 2024.

The recruitment drive aims to fill up a total of 60 Senior Personal Assistant posts at the Delhi High Court.
