The Supreme Court on Friday stayed the Allahabad High Court’s judgment ruling the 2004 Uttar Pradesh Board of Madarsa Education Act as unconstitutional, reported Live Law.

“We are of the view that the issues raised in the petitions merit closer reflection,” said a bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandracuhd and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra.

The court issued a notice on the five special leave petitions filed against the High Court ruling. It also observed that the High Court erred in interpreting the provisions of the Act, which are regulatory in character.

The top court said that directions of the High Court would impact the future course of education of nearly 17 lakh students.

The Uttar Pradesh Board of Madarsa Education Act provides for madrasas in Uttar Pradesh to operate under the aegis of the state minority welfare department, unlike other minority educational institutes that operate under the education department.

Out of nearly 25,000 madrasas in Uttar Pradesh, more than 16,500 are recognised by the Uttar Pradesh Board of Madarsa Education, The Indian Express reported.

On March 22, the Allahabad High Court ruled that the Act was unconstitutional. A division bench of Justices Vivek Chaudhary and Subhash Vidyarthi directed the state government to accommodate students studying in Islamic schools in other educational institutions.

Hearing the case on Friday, the Supreme…

The National Council for Education Research and Training has deleted at least three references to the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya from the Class 12 political science textbook of the Central Board of Secondary Education, reported The Indian Express.

Instead, the lesson now gives primacy to the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, the newspaper reported.

The educational body, which advises the Union government on school syllabi, has revised Chapter 8 of the Politics in India since Independence textbook to refer to the Supreme Court’s 2019 verdict on the Ayodhya dispute as one of the five key recent developments in Indian politics.

On November 9, 2019, the Supreme Court held that the demolition of the Babri mosque on December 6, 1992, was illegal, but handed over the land to a trust for a Ram temple to be constructed. The court also directed that a five-acre plot in Ayodhya be allotted to Muslims to build a mosque.

The Ram Janmabhoomi temple is now being built on the site of the Babri mosque, which was demolished by Hindutva extremists because they believed that it stood on the spot where the Hindu deity Ram was born. The incident had triggered communal riots across the country.

According to the newspaper, the original lesson comprised a four-page section on the Ayodhya dispute, detailing…

In his 1936 speech titled “Annihilation of Caste”, BR Ambedkar advocated inter-dining, inter-caste marriage and destroying religious scriptures as steps to ending the degrading caste system. Eighty-eight years later, India grapples with the business of annihilating not just caste but also class – a challenge that has become even more urgent in the face of the Maharashtra government’s amendment to the August 2009 Right to Education Act in February.

The Act made education a fundamental right of children between the ages of six and 14 in all government, government-aided and private schools. Crucially, private schools were required to reserve 25% of their seats for children belonging to the economically weaker sections of society and those from the backward castes.

But according to the amendment, private schools located within a kilometre of government or government-aided schools will no longer be required to reserve 25% of their seats for children from the backward classes and castes. Kerala and Karnataka already have similar rules.

One of the most harmful effects of the amendment is that it will lead to segregation of children on the basis of caste and class. It will essentially mean cocooning students from the so-called forward castes and upper classes in affluent private schools, while ghettoising…

Whenever the Scripps National Spelling Bee in the US takes place, parents and children may wonder: What does it take to become a champion? Is it worth the effort?

As just about any former Scripps champion could tell you, the contest – which took place from May 31 to June 1 – involves a fair amount of luck, so preparation does not guarantee a victory. There’s simply no way a contestant can know which word awaits them from the Merriam-Webster Unabridged Dictionary. But if young people find enjoyment in learning how to spell words, as well as understanding the origins and meanings of these words, then they will feel proud of what they accomplished.

Still, as I state in my book, Hyper Education: Why Good Schools, Good Grades, and Good Behavior Are Not Enough, there are certain practices that can greatly boost a child’s chances of becoming an excellent speller. I observed these practices among families who assist their children in competitive academics.

Invest in study materials

Rather than just open the dictionary, contestants study word lists, including the 4,000 words in the free official study guide provided by Scripps. Some parents create their own word lists based on observing past bees.

But to the extent possible, competitive spellers, including several previous Scripps National Spelling Bee winners, have purchased special…

The National Council of Educational Research and Training has dropped chapters on evolution, the periodic table of elements and sources of energy from Class 10 science textbooks.

The education body responsible for formulating school curriculum in the country has also removed chapters Democracy and Diversity, Popular Struggles and Movements, Political Parties and Challenges to Democracy from Class 10 political science textbooks.

The NCERT said the chapters have been deleted as a part of a syllabus “rationalization” exercise. “In view of the Covid-19 pandemic, it is imperative to reduce content load on students,” it said.

The NCERT had made the decision to remove these chapters from the textbooks last year based on recommendations of experts, PTI reported. The changes have been implemented after the NCERT released textbooks for the new academic year that started in May.

The education body has said that the changes will remain in place for the next two academic years, in line with the National Education Policy that was approved by the Centre in 2020, reported Nature.

The decision to remove the chapter on evolution, including the Darwinian theory on natural selection, was opposed by more than 4,500 scientists, teachers and science communicators in an appeal organized by Kolkata-based Breakthrough Science Society last month.

“The scientific community feels that students will remain seriously handicapped in science & history.”

The National Council for Educational Research and Training on Tuesday said it has removed references to Khalistan from the Class 12 political science textbook. Khalistan refers to an independent Sikh state sought by some groups.

The changes to the textbook were made after the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee last month raised objections about the content.

It had alleged that the NCERT misrepresented historical details about Sikhs in the textbook. The Sikh body had particularly objected to the mentioning of the Anandpur Sahib resolution in the textbook, Politics In India Since Independence.

The Anandpur Sahib resolution was a document adopted by the Shiromani Akali Dal in 1973. The resolution affirmed the party’s commitment to the Sikh religion and demanded greater autonomy for Punjab. It also demanded that the city of Chandigarh should be handed over to Punjab and that Punjabi should be given second-language status in neighboring states.

In the textbook, a passage about the resolution read: “The resolution also spoke of the aspirations of the Sikh community and declared its goal as attaining the ‘bolbala’ [dominance] of the Sikhs. The resolution was a plea for strengthening federalism, but it could also be interpreted as a plea for a separate Sikh nation.”

On Tuesday, the NCERT said that the sentence – “but it could also be interpreted…

The Gaur Collection of modern Indian works on paper is particularly notable for a remarkable variety of prints made by many of the subcontinent’s most influential printmakers. These include intaglios, lithographs, serigraphs, and relief prints by such master printmakers as Zarina, Krishna Reddy, Anupam Sud, Laxma Goud, Chittaprosad Bhattacharya, Haren Das, Somnath Hore, and Jyoti Bhatt. The collection also possesses a number of prints by moderns best known for their work in other media, including Arpita Singh, MF Husain, FN Souza, and Anish Kapoor. The high representation of prints in a collection of works on paper may be linked to the surface qualities of handmade paper that lend themselves remarkably well to the tactile nature of print. This essay lays out a brief history of printmaking in India, with particular reference to artists in this collection.

From reproductive to creative

Printing arrived in India in the mid-1500s as a colonial import, first for evangelical purposes, and later to further economic and political ambitions. From “printing” emerged “printmaking” or “the art of the printed picture,” as the demand for printed illustrations grew. By the mid-18th century, there was a thriving printing and publishing industry in Calcutta (now Kolkata), the capital of the British Raj.

On his first day in Class 9 at his new school, Rampengthua was in tears.

“I cried a lot that day,” said the 15-year-old, recalling that day in September 2021 when he joined the Government Thanchhuma High School in Farkawn, a village in Mizoram’s Champhai district. “I did not understand a word of what I was being taught,” he said.

Rampengthua’s distress was natural. The classes were being held in English and Mizo, languages he did not understand.

Back home in Chin state, Myanmar, he spoke Hakha at home and Burmese or Myan in school.

But a few months earlier, Rampengthua and his family had left his home behind. They made a dangerous journey on foot, abandoning their home of many years and crossed over to Farkawn – just as thousands of people from Myanmar had arrived in India in March 2021, when the military junta seized power from a democratically elected government.

Mizoram opened its doors to the Chin refugees, with whom the Mizos share ethnic ties. Relief camps were set up, and civil society groups pitched in to help the displaced.

In August 2021, the Mizoram government allowed children of refugee families to continue their education in government-run schools.

Despite his struggle with language, Rampengthua saw that being admitted to a school…
