A group of students and their parents protested outside the NG Acharya and DK Marathe College in Mumbai’s north eastern Chembur area on Wednesday after the junior college denied entry to students wearing burqas or hijabs over their uniforms.

The college has, this year, introduced uniforms for Class 11 and 12 students. Burqas, hijabs, skull caps and headscarves have been prohibited, said a Class 11 student.

On August 1, the Class 11 student said she was stopped from entering the college gates because she wore a burqa over her uniform. Since that day, the administration has not allowed students to enter the college unless they wear the uniform – for girls, an off-white salwar suit.

“Most of the students in my class are Muslims,” the student said. “When the college introduced uniforms, we agreed to wear them. Our parents only had a conditon that headscarves must be allowed.”

According to Faizan Qureshi, shakha pramukh of the Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction), the students do not mind wearing the uniform. “They have paid the college for the uniform as well,” he said.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday told the Supreme Court that he is not guilty of any offence and will not apologise for his Modi surname remark which led to his conviction in a criminal defamation case, reported Live Law.

The case is related to Gandhi’s speech ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in which he had referred to thieves as having the surname Modi. A Surat court had sentenced him to two years in jail on March 24. This led to his immediate disqualification as a Lok Sabha MP.

On July 15, Gandhi moved the Supreme Court against a Gujarat High Court order that refused to put on hold his conviction and the two-year jail term in the case. If his conviction is not stayed, Gandhi will have to complete his jail term. The politician will also be prohibited from contesting elections for the next six years.

On Wednesday, Gandhi said that he has always maintained that he is not guilty of offence and that the conviction is unsustainable. He added that if he wanted to apologise, he would have done it much earlier.

The Allahabad High Court on Thursday allowed the Archaeological Survey of India to conduct a scientific survey of the Gyanvapi mosque premises, reported Bar and Bench.

The survey was first ordered by a Varanasi district court on July 21 on a petition by a group of Hindu litigants seeking the right to hold prayers inside the mosque compound. However, on July 24, the Supreme Court put an interim stay on the order, allowing the mosque committee to move the High Court against the survey.

However, on Thursday, Chief Justice Pritinker Diwaker of the Allahabad High Court dismissed the mosque committee’s plea.

“The Varanasi court was justified in ordering for ASI survey of the premises,” the High Court said, reported Live Law. “Scientific survey is necessary in the interest of justice.”

The mosque panel had argued before the High Court that such surveys should be allowed only at a later stage after both parties in the case submit their evidence. It has also said that excavation work might damage the structural integrity of the mosque.

Meanwhile, the Hindu litigants said they were making a statement on record that no damage will be caused to the structure and that no work will be carried out in the area sealed by an earlier order of the Supreme Court.
